“Traditionally national public health institutes have worked with control of infectious diseases: laboratory, surveillance and expert functions. But with the increase of non-communicable diseases as heavy public health burden more and more institutes have expanded their work to help prevent NCDs. This work has nowadays increasing support from WHO and even from UN after its high level meetings,” explains IANPHI President Pekka Puska.

In July 2014, Puska published an editorial in the Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal on the importance of preventing cardiovascular diseases, as a measure to control NCDs. Read the article, Prevention of cardiovascular diseases: a spearhead for control of non-communicable diseases, here.
