Worldwide, seasonal influenza outbreaks cause 3-5 million severe cases and 250,000 to 500,000 deaths each year. Because the influenza virus spreads easily from person to person, flu outbreaks can quickly sweep through a community, straining health services and lowering productivity.

The World Health Organization, recognizing the global burden of Influenza, established the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS), which is now comprised of over 140 institutes, including many IANPHI members Chile
