Press Release from THL:

Professor Pekka Puska chairs the independent expert group to assess the impact of FCTC

The historical WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), ratified currently by 180 countries, became effective ten years ago. The countries of FCTC decided at their biennial meeting last year that an independent seven member expert team should be established to assess the global impact of this historical treaty. FCTC is the first time international law is used to fight a public health problem – tobacco, that kills annually some 6 million people.

The expert group started its work on 10–11. August in Geneva. Professor Pekka Puska from Finland was elected as chair of the group. The meeting agreed on the methods, on its type of work and on the 12 countries of field visits for in depth information. The group will give its report to the next meeting of the FCTC countries in autumn 2016.
