On February 3rd, Germany's Robert Koch Institute (RKI) - a long-time IANPHI member - was joined by German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkle for the inauguration of its new office building and biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) laboratory. The laboratory, one of only four such labs in the country, will now begin extensive testing prior to its operation. BSL-4 laboratories are required for working with highly pathogenic viruses, such as Ebola. According to a statement by RKI, "The laboratory’s special design and engineering features enable the staff to safely handle samples for diagnostic purposes and research, preventing pathogens from escaping to the environment." RKI will be Germany's first federal institution in the medical area to have a BSL-4 laboratory.

RKI Director General and IANPHI Executive Board Member Dr. Reinhard Burger joined Chancellor Merkel and other RKI officials for the ribbon cutting ceremony (see photo).
