2019 IANPHI Annual Meeting: Conclusions from the Executive Board


These are the IANPHI Executive Board's official conclusions of the 2019 IANPHI Annual Meeting hosted by the Ethiopian Public Health Institute in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on December 3-6. This year's theme was: “Evidence informed global action for trans-boundary public health challenges”.

2019 IANPHI Annual Meeting

1. IANPHI thanks the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) for hosting the 2019 annual meeting.

2. IANPHI welcomed 159 participants from 59 countries from around the world in the prestigious premises of Africa CDC and the African Union in Addis Ababa.

3. Holding IANPHI’s Annual Meeting in Addis Ababa sent the important message that beyond their primary core functions, national public health institutes have a pivotal role in social and economic development. IANPHI continues to support establishing and strengthening NPHIs in Africa.

4. IANPHI welcomed five new member organizations. IANPHI now has 114 members across 99 countries.

5. IANPHI and Africa CDC signed a collaborative agreement to jointly coordinate their efforts to reduce international disease threats and improve population health in Africa.

6. IANPHI and ASPHER agreed on a Memorandum of Understanding which includes supporting the quality assurance of public health education and training through APHEA.

7. Participants discussed public health topics that ranged from the role of NPHIs in a nation’s development to strengthening national preparedness against health emergencies and also how to work with different stakeholders to promote healthier societies.

8. Practical discussions were held with partners on how NPHIs could support the World Health Organisation’s triple billion goals of achieving universal health coverage, addressing health emergencies and promoting healthier populations. Conclusions from these discussions will feed into the Lancet Synergies Commission.

9. IANPHI will follow up on its collaboration with WHO at global and regional levels to approve a joint action plan. IANPHI will also participate in the Conference on Health Security and diplomacy 24-26 March 2020 in Marrakech.

10. IANPHI will update its strategic priorities to demonstrate the role of NPHIs in today’s most pressing global public health challenges.

11. IANPHI’s European Regional Network meeting will take place in Paris, on March 30-31, 2020.

12. The 2020 IANPHI Annual Meeting will take place in Brazil, hosted by Brazil's FIOCRUZ, on December 1-4, 2020.
