Provide training in rabies vaccine production to ensure adequate supplies

The only place in Peru where anti-rabies vaccine is manufactured is the National Center for Biological Products at the National Institute of Health (Instituto Nacional de Salud). Within the next two years, production of human vaccine will change to manufacture in cell culture. This change in technology will require infrastructure improvements related to biosecurity and production flow as well as use of different equipment and ancillary materials.

The institute will use IANPHI funding to train a professional from the National Center for Biological Products in production systems for anti-rabies vaccine in cell culture for human and veterinary use. Funding for this capacity-building project will also be used to train staff and provide incentives to apply the new technologies and incorporate upgraded biosecurity measures. Improved production techniques will increase vaccine quality and quantity to meet regional demand and ensure availability of vaccine for emergency use.
