G20 National Public Health Institute Side Meeting


Between September 9-11, 2024, an official G20 National Public Health Institute side meeting was held in Rio De Janeiro, under the G20 presidency of Brazil. The meeting was co-hosted by IANPHI, Fiocruz, and Africa CDC. The objectives of the conference were to:

  1. Build a consensus that is representative of the member countries' national institutes on the agenda defined by the G20 presidency, contributing to the decisions of the Health Ministers and the Heads of State and Government of the G20;
  2. Support the agendas approved by the G20 in their respective national health promotion plans in the aspects related to their respective responsibilities and
  3. Guide an international cooperation plan to enhance the actions of NPHIs regarding the agendas approved by the G20 and evaluate potential and appropriate sources of financing.

Discussions were held on the four main priorities for the G20 Health Working Group and the role of National Public Health Institutes in delivering outcomes that prevented and reduced harmful health impacts on populations. The themes were: Preparedness and Response to Health Emergencies, Climate Change and Health, Health Equities and Health System Resilience.

A declaration was developed and agreed which has a call for action with five priorities for National Public Health Institutes. The declaration was presented to the G20 Ministers of Health.
