IANPHI side-event at the World Health Summit: Mobilizing Global and National Public Health Assets to Build a Resilient and Sustainable Global Health Architecture


This session discussed how public health institutes, agencies, schools and networks can collaborate in support of strengthened public health and health security.

It brought together:

  • Duncan Selbie, IANPHI President
  • Neil Squires, IANPHI Secretary General
  • Bettina Borisch, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA)
  • John Middleton, President of the Global Network for Academic Public Health (GNAPH)
  • Laura Magaña, President & CEO of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH)
  • Khassoum Diallo, Coordinator, Data, Evidence and Knowledge Management, HWF- UHC Cluster at WHO

They shared a brief overview of the mission of each of the networks, considering how network members are being impacted and might respond to the current shifts in funding for global health.

Comments from the floor then illustrated the challenges faced and the approach taken, focusing on actions supporting the strengthening of public health systems and public health workforce skills and competencies.

  • Haitham Bashier, PHEMC Director, EMPHNET, discussed EMPHNET’s support to competency-based training and meeting training with NPHIs’ needs.
  • Bernardo Hernandez Prado, Dean, School of Public Health of the Mexican National Health Institute, explained how the Mexican system is working to ensure trainings meet the country’s needs.
  • Sofia Viegas, Deputy Director, National Institute of Health of Mozambique, shared a successful collaboration with training institutions to develop the public health workforce needed, and to offer competency-based training.
  • Alex Riolexus Ario, Director, Uganda National Institute of Public Health, discussed the role of FETP as part of the NPHI structure.
  • Aamer Ikram, IANPHI Vice-President, shared Pakistan’s experience in mobilizing public health assets.
  • Vernon Lee, CEO, Singapore CDA, detailed the relationship between the NPHI, the One Health agencies, the School of Public Health, and other public health stakeholders in Singapore.
  • Margaret Kaseje, President, Association of Schools of Public Health in Africa (ASPHA), explored the steps needed to move towards competency-based training.
  • Geoffrey Namara, Country Support Officer, WHO Berlin Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence, shared the different initiatives within the health emergencies programme that are related to strengthening the NPHA/Is.
  • Lars Schaade, Director, Robert Koch Institute, showed trainings and partnership initiatives developed in Germany to strengthen public health workforce.
  • Scott Dowell, Senior advisor, Global Health Emergency Corps lead at World Health Organization, wrapped up the comments showing pride for all the great initiatives.
