2024 IANPHI Annual Meeting | Advancing Public Health, Resilience, and Sustainability
The 2024 IANPHI Annual Meeting was held on February 7 and 8 in Kigali, Rwanda and hosted by the Rwanda Biomedical Centre. This year's theme was "Advancing public health, resilience, and sustainability".
Global understanding of the importance of public health has increased significantly following the COVID-19 pandemic. There is now an opportunity to advance public health, drawing on the political commitment and resources mobilized to strengthen health security and ‘build back better’. A key objective in building back better will be to increase system resilience and build sustainability, which will be critically important given the hazards to health posed by climate change and resulting extreme weather events.
This IANPHI annual meeting was an opportunity for IANPHI members to share their experience of advancing public health at the national and local level, and to discuss progress needed nationally and globally to support that action.
The theme of advancing public health was used to reflect on the global impetus to strengthen collaborative surveillance and to consider the new tools and mechanisms to do that, such as strengthened international pathogen surveillance network (IPSN), strengthened data and analytics for public health, through the WHO Berlin Hub, and new funding mechanisms, such as the Pandemic Fund.
The theme of resilience considered the institutional and workforce needs for more resilient health systems, considering current efforts to develop the public health and emergency workforce and increase the capacity of National Public Health Institutions (NPHIs) and health systems to deliver the Essential Public Health Functions (EPHFs).
Under the theme of sustainability, we discussed climate change and its impact and address the intractable problem of health inequity and of national and international efforts to ensure public health systems address inequalities, which is essential for sustainability.
